United Combat League returned to 115 Bourbon Street for Brawl at Bourbon Street. The night of amateur mixed martial arts action featured eight fights headlined by Xavier Guzman taking on Dan Bravo.

The main event featured Xavier Guzman taking on Dan Bravo. The two looked hesitant at first as they respected each other’s punching power. It was Guzman who landed first, but Bravo landed what mattered. Several big punches and Guzman was pinned against the cage. Bravo continued his assault bloodying up Guzman. The punches didn’t stop coming and the ref had seen enough and stopped the fight.

The first fight to go past the first round featured Tyran Sutton taking on Moe Malli. The first round Malli took Sutton to the ground and quickly passed to mount. From there he threw punch after punch, but Sutton was able to defend and move enough to not be in danger. Sutton stood up and Malli went for another takedown, but Sutton was blatently holding the fence and was deducted a point. As the round ended Malli grabbed an armbar, but time ran out. The second round Malli again went for a takedown and again Sutton grabbed the fence. He was deducted another point and then the action stalled on the feet. Neither fighter did much and the ref told them to engage. The third round Malli quickly took Sutton down and unloaded ground and pound until the ref stopped the fight.

Billy Jessie took on David Hammons in a heavyweight bout. Hammons immediately took Jessie down and worked short punches to the body of Jessie. Jessie used the punches to slip Hammons’s arm passed his leg and set up a triangle choke. He adjusted the choke and Hammons tapped before going to sleep.

Middleweights Josh Weddington and Glen Evans were up next. Weddington landed a good inside leg kick and Evans swarmed Weddington. Weddington then grabbed a standing guillotine and Evans tried to pull guard while being choked. Weddington didn’t go to the ground and cranked the choke even more and Evans tapped to the submission.

Jason Croses wanted to finish his fight quick against Mike Dombrowski. Croses had the height and reach advantage and Dombrowski tried to close the distance with a double leg takedown attempt. Unfortunately he was too low and Croses was able to defend by grabbing Dombrowski’s ankles. Croses then punished Dombrowski’s body with repeated punches until he was free of the takedown attempt. He spun to the back of his opponent and the punches came down even faster and harder, forcing the ref to stop the fight.

G2’s Ben Carlson took on Adam Langwinski and Carlson made quick work of Langwinski. The two were pawing at each other trying to find their distance. Langwinski landed a leg kick and then the two clinched. Carlson jumped up and pulled guard while grabbing a guillotine choke. He adjusted a bit and Langwinski tried to pop his head free, but it just forced the choke in deeper and Langwinski tapped.

Bob Gacki took on Neko Jefferson and showcased some great wrestling skills. The two started off exchanging jabs and Gacki went for a head kick. He missed and slipped, but popped right back up. Jefferson then went for a takedown and Gacki defended it. He got his leg free from the takedown attempt and spun to get Jefferson’s back. He put both hooks in and worked for the rear naked choke. He couldn’t get it and then tried to flatten Jefferson out and in the process sunk in the fight ending rear naked choke.

Kicking off the night of action was Trevor Raylae taking on G2’s Vladimir Cerbadji. The two fighters came out and were swinging with bad intentions, both landing good punches. Cerbadji scored a takedown and then worked massive ground and pound from within Raylae’s guard. Raylae tried to get his hips and legs up for an armbar, but it wasn’t there. He stood and the two traded punches again. This time it was Raylae who went for a takedown, but Cerbadji sprawled and snuck an arm under his chin. He locked his hand on his bicep and rolled onto his shoulder, forcing the tap.

United Combat League returned to Bourbon Street on Wednesday September 19th. The night of action featured thirteen amateur fights. Read on for the full recap and results.

Brian Peters and Jason Crose set the tone for the rest of the night. Crose came out with a big leg kick that hurt Peters. The two then started just throwing punch after punch with neither flinching. Crose then clinched and worked a knee before scoring a trip takedown. Peters used the momentum from the takedown and wound up on top. He quickly passed to mount and rained down punch after punch. Crose tried to defend, was unable and tapped to the strikes. The ref was a little late to stop the fight after Crose tapped and Crose was visibly upset for eating more punches.

Mike Kosur had bad intentions with his punches against Lawrence Sieber. After landing a right, he pressed Sieber against the cage. He assaulted Sieber’s body with hook after hook. Sieber tried to defend, but Kosur used it to take him down. He landed in side control and worked small punches before finishing the fight with an Americana.

Chris Lozano and Bob Gacki had an amazing back and forth battle. The first round Gacki nearly landed a front kick to Lozano’s face. After he was taken down by an impressive single leg. The two were stood up after a stall in the action and Gacki scored a takedown of his own. The round was extremely close, but Gacki likely won for damage. The second round Gacki had a great takedown, but as he tried to pass to mount Lozano reversed. He spent nearly two minutes in Gacki’s guard landing small punches. The final round both fighters missed with jabs and then clinched. Gacki again with a takedown. He was in Lozano’s guard but Lozano tried to spin out and gave up his back. Gacki took advantage, flattened him out, and after a readjustment locked in a fight ending rear naked choke.

Tavares Greene was phenomenal with his takedowns as they seemed to come almost at will against Brendon Fergusen. And while he was able to get Fergusen to the ground, Fergusen was impossible to put away. Fergusen threatened multiple times with an inverted triangle, and when he couldn’t get a tap, it did enable him to escape the bad position. By the end of the third round, both fighters were tired. Greene scored another takedown and worked an armbar as time ran out.

Heavyweights David Hammons and George Jefferson were up next. Hammons rushed Jefferson and scored a takedown right away. He passed to side control, but Jefferson had ahold of his head. Jefferson used it to roll Hammons over top of him and then got the mount. Jefferson started throwing punch after punch, Hammons tried to escape by giving up his back, then rolling back over, but it was for naught and he tapped to the strikes.

Anthony Ferro stuffed an immediate takedown by Mike Dombrowski. He unloaded punch after punch while Dombrowski tried to score the takedown. Ferro then transitioned to a guillotine choke, but gave that up in lieu of his position. He postured up and the punches came fast and hard. The ref told Dombrowski to do something, he didn’t and the ref stopped the fight.

Ben Carlson smiled as he touched gloves with Adam Langinski. Langinski just missed with a high kick and Carlson shot for a takedown. He was in Langinski’s guard and postured up and started to throw punch after punch. Langinski escaped the bad position, only to have Carlson grab a guillotine and pull guard. It looked tight, but Langinski fought his way out and on top of Carlson. The two stood and Langinski scored a takedown. Carlson tried for a gogoplata, but Langinski was able to escape. Carlson then transitioned to a triangle but it wasn’t that deep. He then rolled over to have a mounted triangle where he threw punches forcing Langinski to tap to the strikes.

Josh Weddington had the largest fan base of the night when he took on Glenn Evans. Evans ducked his head and immediately went for the takedown, but Weddington defended it well. Evans continued to try for the takedown and Weddington sprawled and was able to take his back. Weddington threw punch after punch until the ref was forced to stop the fight.

Justin Hughes came out swinging with bad intentions against Dan Bravo. Hughes landed first and Bravo seemed a little woozy. Hughes followed up, but Bravo was able to recover. The two didn’t mind trading punches, even while inside a clinch. Big front kick by Bravo sends Hughes to the ground. Bravo follows up with a couple of punches and the ref stopped the fight.

Riot Waller and Nick Garcia put on an at times exciting fight, at others not so much. Waller was able to land his punches almost at will, but Garcia had a rock hard chin. In each of the three rounds, Waller dropped Garcia, but was unable to finish him. By the end of the fight Garcia was bloodied up and Waller looked like he was able to go another three rounds.

Brian Titus looked out matched from the start against Billy Jessie. Titus attempted a jumping crane kick that was completely off the mark. Jessie just looked him like “really?” Jessie then landed a straight left and Titus went to the canvas. Jessie threw punches to the body of Titus then transitioned to knees. After three knees Titus tapped to the attack.

The first of two main events featured Andrew West taking on Ryan Kerwin for the middleweight title. Both fighters came out ready to throw and they did just that. The punches came fast and furious and it was nearly impossible to tell who was landing more. The two clinched and West landed a big uppercut that crumbled Kerwin. Kerwin recovered quickly and got a takedown. West threatened with a guillotine, but Kerwin fought out of it. Once free he passed to mount and had an armbar that looked deep. West fought out of it and escaped. He tried to pass to mount, but Kerwin was ready and caught him half guard. The two stood and Kerwin landed a huge punch as the round ended. The second round the two came out swinging. West stumbled Kerwin, but the two clinched and Kerwin had the takedown. West threatened again with a guillotine and used it to scoot out from under Kerwin. Kerwin rolled and grabbed a kneebar and forced West to tap.

The main event featured Matt Brown taking on Miguel Garza for the bantamweight title. The first round Brown showed that he had a reach advantage and picked Garza apart with his jabs. Garza wasn’t taking it lightly and started to land punches of his own. By the halfway point of the round though, Garza was visibly bleeding from his nose. Garza attempted a takedown, but Brown was ready and stuffed it. The second round Brown opened up with a high kick and a right hook that opened up a cut over Garza’s eye. Blood was coming fast from his face and he wanted to get the fight to the ground. The two clinched and Brown grabbed a power standing guillotine. Garza tried to fight his way out, but once he was pressed against the cage with no place else to go, he tapped.

Starting on Wednesday, September 19th and ending on Saturday September 29th, Chicagoland is being invaded with card after card of amateur mixed martial arts action. The first show is the return of United Combat League to Bourbon Street on the 19th. This marks the second time the promotion has visited the venue, and their third show this year.

Just two days later on Friday September 21, Total Fight Challenge returns with an impressive lineup of fights. Headlining the night of action will be Rob Caulfield taking on Martyn Jimenez for the interim welterweight title. Also on the card, John Weinert versus Ryan Berry for the bantamweight belt and Trevor Bob Adzeko goes to battle with Luis Miguel for the interim lightweight belt. In addition to the mixed martial arts fights, there will be two Muay Thai bouts on the card as well.

The next night, American Predator FC invades the Sears Centre for the first time. The amateur promotion has put on numerous high quantity and quality shows since their inception. With the ever growing fan base, organizers looked to a bigger venue and found one. With nearly six weeks until the show, all of the table seats had been sold out and only a select few sky boxes and general admission was left. APFC Unleashed is set to feature six title fights on the card.

Capping off the action is Fight Card Entertainment’s return to the Sports Zone in Melrose Park for No Mercy 2012. The night of action was supposed to see a lightweight title fight between Brandon pries and Tony Ortiz, but an injury to Priest has allowed Charlie Radtke to step in and fight for the title. Also on the card Yousef Alghoul will defend his title against Angelo Rivera Jr.

United Combat League put on their sophomore event at Bobak’s Signature Room in Woodridge, Illinois. The night of action was kicked off with two amateur kickboxing matches that got the crowd into the fights. The rest of the night showcased twenty amateur mixed martial arts fighters headlined by James Waller and Andrew Potapenko.

Waller rushed in at the start of the main event, but Potapenko was ready and landed a counter. He then threw a kick, but it was Waller’s turn to counter punch. Potapenko pulled guard as he had a good grip on the arm of Waller, but Waller started to throw bomb after bomb to get free. Potapenko tried to threaten a submission with his legs, but Waller opted to stand up and trade. Potapenko immediately clinched and Waller tripped the legs out from under Potapenko. Unfortunately for Waller he was reversed and Potapenko spent the last seconds of the round trying to pass to mount.

The second round Waller swarmed again, this time landing a knee. Potapenko wanted a takedown, but Waller countered with a guillotine. Potapenko popped free and landed an uppercut. Waller stepped back but a left hook landed flush and dropped him. Potapenko rushed and looked for the quick finish but Waller was able to recover. Potapenko adjusted his positioning, passed to mount and landed a big right hand. The right was enough to have Waller stop defending and the ref jumped in and stopped it.

The co-main event featured Kalee Howell taking on Deandra Brenn. Brenn took the fight to Howell immediately taking her down. She got the mount and started to throw punch after punch, but was holding the cage and was stood up with a warning. After the restart, Brenn again got the takedown and battled Howell. Brenn had a choke of some sort, but couldn’t secure a finish. The second round Brenn again scored the takedown. She immediately passed to mount but started to ride up to high. As she was attempting to sit back down, Howell muscled her way to a reversal. Brenn’s head was pushed against the cage and Howell unloaded with every bit of strength she had left. Brenn wasn’t defending enough and the ref stopped the fight.

David Mitchell rushed Hassan Umer at the start of the bell for a takedown, but Umer defended it well. He then dropped for a single leg takedown of his own, but Mitchell wanted a guillotine. Umer popped free from the submission and then scored another takedown. Mitchell gave up his back and Umer sunk in a rear naked choke. After a small grip adjustment, Mitchell was forced to tap.

There were back-to-back knockouts, both ending quickly. First up James Camisa took a big punch from Skylar Lindsey, but then countered and dropped Lindsey. He followed up with two short punches as the ref pulled him off, but they were unneeded. Just after Xavier Guzman took on Matt Colt. Colt came out with kicks, while Guzman wanted to counter. Another counter by Guzman that lands and Colt is unconscious.

Shane Camp and Mike Murphy should both be awarded a tough-to-finish award. In the first round Murphy defended a takedown attempt and worked for a D’Rce choke. He couldn’t get it, and switched to a guillotine choke. Again he couldn’t finish, so he let it go and took Camp’s back. He rode the back of Camp to mount and back all the while throwing punches. Camp tried to roll out, and Murphy used the opportunity to try for an arm triangle choke. He had it in deep, but couldn’t get the angle as he was against the cage as time ran out. The second round Murphy landed a right and Camp returned the favor. This time Camp defended the takedown attempt and wound up with a top mounted guillotine. He tried to adjust several times, but eventually he was too high and had to let go of the choke. Murphy rolled him over, and Camp threatened with a kimura, but time expired. All tied up after two rounds both fighters wanted to leave it all in the cage. Murphy scored the quick takedown and both fighters worked short punches. Murphy was able to pass to side control and against wanted the arm triangle. Camp was able to escape, but Murphy was able to control the position for the rest of the round . The judges were split, but Murphy won the fight.

Heavyweight Robert Little opened the fight with a flying kick against Pete Juska. Juska was able to avoid it, but the two fighters clinched against the cage. Juska landed body punches while Little worked knees to the body. Little attempted a standing guillotine, but Juska was able to escape. Once free of the submission attempt he unloaded a barrage of punches. Little looked hurt and he immediately clinched to recover. The two fighters separate and Little slipped while back-peddling. Juska tried to rush Little, but Little was able to shoot for a takedown and got it. Little started to work hammer fists, but Juska threw his legs up and secured an armbar. He adjusted his grip and Little was forced to tap.

Mike Demakes and John Marino put on an exciting back and forth battle. Demakes scored a takedown early but Marino tried to counter with a guillotine. Marino held onto the guillotine attempt for a long time before Demakes was able to slip free. Once out he started to work punches to the ribs. He postured up and threw short jabs before settling back into the guard. Marino was looking for an arm to trap, but Demakes kept punching his way out. Marino was able to push away and stood up, but not without eating several knees on his way up. Marino returned the favor by landing a knee to the body of Demakes who crumbled to the ground. Marino swarmed, but Demakes was playing possum as he secured a triangle. He couldn’t get the leverage and let it go as time expired in the round. The second the two fighters immediately went toe-to-toe before Marino scored a takedown. Demakes was able to trap an arm and had a deep armbar. Somehow Marino escaped and he started to throw punch after punch. He took the back and continued his punching assault until the ref stopped the fight.

Jason Croses had a reach advantage over Vaughn Camacho and tried to utilize it at the start with a kick. Camacho landed a straight right hand and then clinched. The two fighters went down, then stood back up and Croses landed a big knee. The two separate and Camacho lands a great one-two combo and Croses stumbled. Camacho jumped on Croses, took his back and sunk in a rear naked choke.

Both Martin Jones and Jorge Ignacio threw feint after feint to start the fight. Neither looked like they wanted to commit to a punch, so Ignacio threw a big leg kick to start the damage. Martin looked for a jab, but Ignacio countered with an overhand right. Martin rushed in, clinched and threw knees, but Ignacio took him down for his troubles. Ignacio was able to get Martin’s back, but Martin was trying to hold the held. Once he let go, Ignacio was able to get his hooks in as well as his arm under the chin of Martin and secure the fight ending rear naked choke.
