XFO 39 Results and Recap
The Xtreme Fighting Organization put on the largest mixed martial arts event since November of 2009 in the greater Chicagoland area. The night of action saw eleven professional contests headlined by Jeff Curran versus Billy Vaughan. Read on for the full recap and results.
The first fight of the night was extremely quick as Hector Garcia needed just thirteen seconds to knock Nicholas Scotti out. Both fighters went to the center of the cage and looked to throw combos. Garcia landed a right hand that sent Scotti to the canvas. Garcia pounced quickly and landed three more shots before the Scott Fischer called a halt to the action.
Lightweights Will Brooks and Bobby Reardanz were up next. In the first round Reardanz looked to throw Brooks off with spinning attacks. Brooks quickly found his range and hurt Reardanz with a straight right. Brooks controlled the rest of the round with varied strikes including knees, elbows and punches. The second round Brooks came out with a big body kick and followed it up with a one-two and a knee that sent Reardanz to the canvas. Brooks took Reardanz down again worked to secure his back. As Reardanz was standing up, Brooks landed a massive belly to back suplex. Brooks finished the round with knees to the body while on the ground. Reardanz was clearly hurt as the third round started and Brooks looked to capitalize on it with a flying knee followed with four more knees. Reardanz looked to pull guard, but did nothing from the position and the ref stood them up. Brooks dropped Reardanz again and this time passed to side control. Brooks was working for a rear naked choke and couldn’t get it but transitioned to a beautiful armbar forcing Reardanz to tap.
Middleweights Kent Rexford and PJ Cajigas were up next. Cajigas looked to establish his striking skills and hurt Rexford with a hook. Rexford decided to put the fight in his realm and took Cajigas down. Once on the ground, Rexford worked short elbows and strikes. Cajigas tried to escape, but Rexford kept heavy pressure on him. Cajigas attempted to roll to break free, but Rexford was able to just take his back and lock in a rear naked choke ending the fight.
The first of two women’s fights were up next as Amanda LaVoy took on Michele Gutierrez. The first half of round one Gutierrez used her boxing to keep LaVoy at bay. Gutierrez continually countered LaVoy’s leg kicks with big rights that sent LaVoy to the canvas. After being knocked on her butt twice, LaVoy changed tactics and went after Gutierrez. A big knee by LaVoy in a clinch was immediately noticeable as Gutierrez’s left eye started to swell. The second round started out much like the first ended with the two women clinching. LaVoy landed a big knee and when the ladies separated a huge gash was visible on Gutierrez. The ref called the doctor in who stopped the fight.
Jason Graves opened up his fight with Dan Stittgen with a good one-two combo. Stittgen just laughed it off and Graves immediately took him to the ground. Graves was looking to pass his guard when Stittgen shifted and locked in an armbar to end the fight.
Fight of the night featured Lucas Gwaltney and Jon Murphy. Murphy through out the fight press forward and score takedown after takedown. Once on the ground he would work small strikes but it was Gwaltney who would work his way back to the feet where he was landing punch after punch. The first round was clearly for Murphy and the second seemed likely for him as well after a cut was examined by the doctor. The third round was a very close round and MMA Recap scored the fight 29-28 for Murphy. When the judges’ scorecards were read, it was a unanimous decision for Gwaltney.
Bantamweights were up next with Terrance Kinney and Dan Aguirre. Kinney shot for a takedown and Aguirre looked for a guillotine. Aguirre attempted to pull guard with the choke, but Kinney escaped into his guard. Aguirre used his wiry legs to lock up a triangle choke. Kinney defended well until Aguirre started to transition to an armbar. Aguirre again readjusted this time pulling down on his opponent’s head and forced a tap.
Mike Stumpf returned to action after a nearly three year layoff against Dan Bolden. The three round fight saw Bolden land his powerful right hand when the fight was standing. But it was Stumpf who controlled the fight as he had takedown after takedown. Once on the ground Stumpf landed several small strikes to keep the fight on the ground. Many times it looked like the ref was going to stand it up, but Stumpf was able to keep it there. In the end the judges didn’t have a difficult decision as Stumpf clearly controlled the fight.
The women were up again as Felice Herrig took on Nicdali Rivera-Calanoc. Rivera-Calanoc quickly rushed Herrig and pushed her up against the cage, but Herrig reversed and bullied her against the cage. Both fighters looked to throw knees and when they separated, it was Herrig who landed a big overhand right. Rivera-Calanoc shot for a takedown, but couldn’t get it. Round two and again Rivera-Calanoc rushed but this time she landed a left hand that found it’s mark. Herrig looked to throw straight punches while her opponent wanted the overhand variety. Herrig started to change levels and work shots to the body, Rivera-Calanoc against rushed her to the cage. Herrig scored a big takedown and threw a couple of elbows forcing Rivera-Calanoc to try to escape. In the ensuring scramble, Herrig was able to get her back and finished the round working for a rear naked choke. The final round Herrig was able to get her back while standing, but in the scramble out, Herrig found herself in a deep guillotine choke. Rivera-Calanoc squeezed to end the fight, however Herrig was able to pop her head out. Once again Herrig worked to get Rivera-Calanoc’s back and finished the round working towards a rear naked choke.
The co-main event featured former WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner taking on Tyler Combs. Varner came out with a fast combo to set up his takedown. He then landed several strikes ranging from elbows to hammer fists. Combs tried to escape, but Varner moved to north-south and locked in a choke. Combs looked like he was defending well, and then went unconscious.
Billy Vaughan stepped up on short notice to fight Jeff Curran in the main event of the evening. Vaughan looked to have a reach advantage, but Curran used his kicks to keep Vaughan in the position he wanted. Curran landed several striking combos as he clearly wanted a knockout victory. At the end of the first round Curran showcased some of his jiu jitsu when Vaughan shot in for a takedown and Curran was able to secure a guillotine. Vaughan started to escape so Curran went for an armbar as time expired in the round. The second round both fighters wanted to finish the fight in highlight reel fashion, but both were just missing with their strikes. Vaughan at one point threw six punches in a row to just have Curran dodge and avoid them. The second round clearly for Curran like the first due to his consistent ability to land his strikes. Vaughan came into the third round like he had nothing to lose and everything to gain. Both fighters quickly clinched and Curran started to work his dangerous knees. Vaughan decided to risk his chances on the ground, but Curran immediately attacked his arm with a kimura attempt. After some readjusting, the kimura looked really deep, but Curran just used it to pass to get back control. Curran nearly had a rear naked choke though Vaughan rolled out of it into an inverted triangle choke. Vaughan tried to free himself by grabbing ahold of Curran’s foot and cranked it. The fight ended with both fighters trying to finish with a flurry of strikes. In the end, the fight went to Curran and he announced it was the last time we would see him inside the XFO cage.

Jamie Varner Versus Tyler Combs To Co-Main XFO 39
Former WEC champion Jamie Varner will step back into the cage in his first fight since being released from the WEC against Tyler Combs. The fight is scheduled to be the co-main event of XFO 39, which will be headlined by Jeff Curran taking on Joe Pearson.
Varner, a three-time WEC champion, was released from the organization after parent company Zuffa merged the WEC with the UFC. Having lost three of his last four with the other going to a draw was not what the UFC was looking for when assimilating the lightweight talent from the WEC to the UFC.
Combs was supposed to fight Jorge Gurgel at “Strikeforce: Feijao vs Henderson” but a late injury scrapped him from the fight. Combs last saw action at Chicago Cagefighting Championship 2 in an exciting fight against Mike Lullo where he unfortunately was submitted in the third round. Combs has fought four previous times for the XFO against top names Michael Corey, Erik Koch and Bart Palaszewski.
XFO 39 will take place on Friday, May 13 at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. Other fighters scheduled to appear on the card include Jon Murphy, Felice Herrig, Michelle Gutierrez, Chris Garcia, Will Brooks, Ryan Bixler, Christian Reynoso, Dennis Dombrow, Mike Stumpf, Matt Tobie, Jason Graves, Vince Ramos and more.

Chicago Cagefighting Championship 2 Results And Recap
The second installment of Chicago Cagefighting Championship took place on Saturday October 16 at The Odeum in Villa Park, Illinois. The night saw four amateur bouts and seven professional bouts. Read on for the full results and recap.
The first amateur bout kicked off the night of action with heavy handed heavyweights. James Gleissner had the superior wrestling, while Ricky Johnson was the stronger and more dangerous striker. The opening round Johnson tagged Gleissner and dropped him, but to Gleissner’s credit he had a powerful shot as he stood back up. After he got on his feet, Gleissner shot in and secured the takedown. From there he worked from full mount to Johnson’s back and secured a rear naked choke. The choke looked deep, but Johnson pushed threw and was able to get out of the submission attempt. With seconds left Johnson rocked Gleissner and opened him up. The second round started and neither fighter wanted to do much. Gleissner secured a takedown, but Johnson powered his way out of it and into full mount. Johnson rained down heavy lefts and rights until the ref stopped the fight.
PJ Casillias from Top Notch took on Colton Martin in a welterweight matchup. Casillias came out with a flying knee and worked several knees from a Muay Thai Clinch. Martin would work free and land some good hooks, but Casillias kept going back to the clinch to work knees to Martin’s body. At the end of the round Martin took Casillias down and secured mount, but Casillias bucked and reversed the position. Martin caught Casillias with a two big right hooks that woke Casillias up and he unloaded several shots. Martin, pushed up against the cage, took several shots before attempting a takedown. Casillias sprawled and landed in side control. From there he trapped an arm, and unloaded peppering shots till Martin turned and gave Casillias the opening he needed to throw heavy rights. The ref had no choice but to halt the action.
Nate Patrick was a far superior wrestler to Kris Blainey and that’s what made all the difference in the fight. Patrick took the fight to the ground and the first round was mostly Patrick holding Blainey down. The second round Patrick again scored a takedown, but this time worked several punches to the side of Blainey’s head until the fight was ended.
Nic Thompson and Matt Hong ended the amateur fights with a crowd pleasing heavyweight fight. Both Thompson and Hong were finding their range and at times rocked the other where a good follow up would have ended it. But they both had granite chins and were able to withstand the damage. As Hong had Thompson in trouble, Thompson landed a punch flush on Hong’s head that crumbled his knees. Thompson moved in, secured mount and and threw big punches until the ref stopped it.
The professional bouts were kicked off with a lightweight fight featuring Adam Ward and Bryan Fielder. The three round battle saw action every where. In the first both fighters exchanged big punches. Ward rocked Fielder and Fielder shot for a takedown. Ward defended it well and got Fielder’s back. The round ended with Ward working for a rear naked choke which was how he spent most of the round. The second round the fighters again exchanged punches before Fielder attempted another takedown. Ward again worked a rear naked choke, but couldn’t secure it. Fielder stood up and both fighters threw kicks that just missed. Fielder again shot for a takedown, but Ward defended and ended up on top of Fielder. Ward worked elbows before going to the rear naked and he nearly finished it, but let go in exchange for throwing some punches to bloody up Fielder. The third round Fielder changed game plans and clinched Ward against the cage. But Ward was able to open a cut above Fielder’s eye and then took Fielder down. Little action and the ref separated the fighters. Fielder took Ward down, but Ward threw his legs up and Fielder was in trouble as he was within a triangle choke. Ward couldn’t secure the choke all the way so opted for throwing elbows and punches from the bottom. The ref halted action to check on Fielder’s eye, and then restarted in the same position. Ward continued his elbows and punches from the bottom to secure the third round and the judges’ decision.
Wanting to ensure their fight didn’t go the distance, Dennis Dombrow and Ray Grindstaff came out swinging. Grindstaff worked for a takedown and got it. Grindstaff worked small shots from Dombrow’s guard, but Dombrow countered with a heel hook. Grindstaff retaliated with heel kicks but Dombrow used the opportunity to escape the bad position and put Grindstaff on his back. Dombrow worked diligently to get the position he wanted which was Grindstaff’s back. From there Dombrow threw punches in bunches, but used a slick transition to secure a triangle choke. With the choke secured, Dombrow torqued Grindstaff’s arm forcing the tapout.
LVRG owner German Reyes returned to action against Frank Pizzirulli. The three round affair saw Reyes successfully take Pizzirulli down each round and transitioned to mount. Reyes was unable to do too much damage as Pizzirulli was doing a fantastic job of controlling Reyes’s head and wrists. In the third round Pizzirulli was able to reverse and land in Reyes’s guard. Reyes worked hard for a sub and with fifteen seconds left he locked in a triangle choke. The bell rang and Pizzirulli tapped out after, but the judges made their decision and it was Reyes all the way.
The last fight before an intermission saw Ryan Williams take on Ryan Bixler. The three round fight was very competitive. In the first round Williams controlled the action by forcing Bixler against the cage. But Bixler would escape and land a punch only to receive a big leg kick by Williams. A big welt appeared on Bixler’s leg as the round ended. The second round Williams again pushed Bixler against the cage. Williams worked for a single leg takedown, but was in danger as Bixler grabbed a hold of Williams’ neck. Williams switched from a single to a double leg and got the big takedown and stayed there for the rest of the round. The third round Bixler tried to find his range, but Williams stayed just out of it. Williams worked for a takedown, secured it. With ten seconds left, both fighters threw elbows without a care and the time ran out for Bixler as the judges’ cards all read for Williams.
After an intermission light heavyweights were in action. Jason Guida and Nick Rossborough went all three rounds. Rossborough who had the superior reach advantage used it through out the three round fight. Guida had no answer for Rossborough’s straight left that kept the shorter Guida at bay. Guida would try to use the clinch to his advantage, but Rossborough would keep Guida pushed up against the cage and worked several body shots to Guida’s body. In the second round Guida attempted a single leg, but wasn’t able to get it. As the third round was ending, Guida nearly had Rossborough’s back while standing, but couldn’t secure it. In the end, Rossborough’s reach proved too much and the judges’ gave the fight to him.
In the night’s co-main event, Mike Lullo took on Tyler Combs in lightweight action. The fight of the night by far as this saw the most action. The first round Lullo and Combs started off trading shots. Combs attempted a takedown, but Lullo pushed Combs against the cage and took him down. Lullo worked multiple punches and elbows but Combs countered with a good rubber guard. Lullo stood up and worked multiple kicks to Combs’s legs. Combs tried to protest a low shot and Lullo rushed in and rocked Combs as the round ended. The second round Lullo took the fight to the ground and quickly passed to side control. From the dominant position he worked several knees to Combs’s shoulder and body. Combs escaped and stood up and threw several haymakers but couldn’t find the target. The third round Lullo landed a big knee that dropped Combs. Lullo quickly tied up Combs and secured his back. Lullo was working for a triangle choke and an armbar and after a couple of adjustments was able to force Combs to tap.
The main event saw Chase Beebe taking on Jared McMahan. Beebe quickly found his range with his left jab and right hook. Beebe stalked McMahan around the cage and McMahan had no answer. McMahan threw a low kick that landed in Beebe’s groin and after the restart Beebe was a man on a mission. Beebe caught McMahan with a right that dropped McMahan and quickly secured a fight ending guillotine choke that forced McMahan to tap.

Ruckus Entertainment “Ruckus 2″ Results And Recap
Ruckus Entertainment put on their second show “Ruckus 2″ last night. Many fans praised the production of the first show, and the second surpassed the first. Local DJ Julian “Jumpin” Perez kept the beats rocking through out the night of action. Four amateur fights were capped off with six professional bouts. Read on for the full results.
Nick Porter and Tyler Bird wanted to set the pace for the night. Unfortunately there wasn’t a lot of action as most of the fight was spent on the ground. Bird easily got the fight to the ground, but once there, couldn’t find a way to finish the fight as his opponent did a good job of controlling his head and arm. While Porter was able to defend well, that didn’t earn him any points and all three judges scored it 30-27 for Bird.
Before the match started, Kevin Switella looked like Sean Anderson had just done something horrible to his family. When the bell rang, both fighters respected each other’s striking game as they were both hesitant to throw a big shot. Near the end of the first round, Anderson got a takedown but didn’t do much with it. In the second round, Switella responded with a takedown of his own. He was able to get full mount, but Anderson was able to roll out of it and punished Switella’s forehead with shots. It was a close round and could have gone either way. The third round Sitella spent most of the round trying to choke Anderson out. While he couldn’t secure the tap, he was able to win the round. Unfortunately for him, it wasn’t enough as the judges awarded the fight to Anderson.
The women were up next with Marcia Allen taking on Kim Novak. Through out the entire three rounds, the women were typically jockeying for position from within the clinch. Both fighters were able to take the other down, and in the end it came down to who did more damage. The judges awarded the victory to Marcia Allen after three rounds of action.
The final amateur fight of the night saw Dan Borke take on Kris Blayney. The first round was extremely close as Blayney scored a takedown, but Borke was able to get out of the troublesome position and secure Blayney’s back. The second round showed the grappling skills of both fighters as they were able to sweep and reverse the position on each other. Blayney wound up the better of the two as he ended the second round in full mount unloading punches. The final round Borke used a trip takedown to land in side control. From there he worked an arm triangle submission, but he couldn’t get the leverage he needed to finish the fight. In the end, the judges saw Blayney as the victor.
Professional bouts
The opening professional fight saw Carson Beebe make his pro debut against Nate Williams. Beebe controlled the action for the full fifteen minutes. The rather lackluster affair saw Williams being taken down by Beebe, Beebe working to get a dominant position, Williams giving up his back, and rinse and repeat. While there were some good strikes by both fighters, the fighters were rather predictable by the end of the third round. In the end the judges awarded Beebe the victory.
Danny Black and Vince Ramos were both making their professional debut and only one could come away as the victor. Ramos quickly shot for a takedown and got it. Ramos then worked to get mount and threw punches in bunches. Black bucked and rolled to escape and brought the fight back to his feet. Unfortunately Ramos quickly worked a takedown and while Black attempted a submission, he wasn’t able to get it. From the takedown, Ramos worked a kimura that looked bad, but Black didn’t give up. Black gave up his back attempting to get out of the hold and Ramos locked in the fight ending rear naked choke.
Bobby Reardanz needed less than ninety seconds to submit Randy Fuentes. Both fighters exchanged kicks before Fuentes worked for a takedown. After the takedown, Fuentes postured up, but Reardanz threw his legs up and was able to secure the choke.
Jay Ellis wanted to punish Tyler Combs as was evident in the stare down between the two before the bell started. Ellis came out with a flying kick that missed. Combs kicked Ellis’s leg, but Ellis caught the kick and used it to take the fight down. From there he quickly moved to mount and landed several shots. But Combs was able to sweep Ellis. After a couple of short shots, Combs stood up and Ellis followed leaving his neck open. Combs grabbed a guillotine choke and it looked deep, but Ellis broke free. After escaping, the referee called time out and deducted a point from Ellis for grabbing the glove to break the choke. At the restart, Combs caught a kick of Ellis, but Ellis jumped over Combs to get Combs’s back. Again Comb’s rolled out of it and this time he started landing powerful shots. Ellis curled up and the ref called a halt to the action.
The co-main event saw Dustin Neace take on Toni Marti. Marti opened the fight with a big overhand right followed by a takedown. Neace defended well as Marti worked for a choke. Neace pushed through it and wound up in Marti’s guard, but the choke was still there. Neace forced his head out and grabbed Marti’s neck. Marti reversed the position and again attempted a choke from within Neace’s guard. Neace threw his legs up working for an arm bar, but Marti spins and worked for a leg lock of his own. Neace spun out of the leg lock and was able to get Marti’s back. Once there he sunk in a rear naked choke forcing Marti to tap.
The main event saw former “Ultimate Fighter” cast member, Jeremy May take on Chris Albandia. Albandia landed a nice leg kick and then worked for a single leg takedown. May defended it well and both fighters were clinched. May with a big knee, followed it up with a good 1-2 combo another knee and finished it off with upper cuts. Albandia looked to be in trouble and he shot for a takedown. Albandia got the takedown, but May showcased his jiu jitsu by locking in a triangle choke. Albandia didn’t give up and May worked several punches to Albandia’s head before being able to pull down on Albandia’s head sinking the choke in as tight as possible and earning the tapout victory.

Recapping Before The Fight – Tyler Combs
Tyler Combs was originally supposed to fight Kyle Watson but an injury in training has left Combs unsure of who his opponent will be on Friday. MMA Recap’s Brent Todd caught up with Combs to find out how his training camp went and his thoughts on his fight at Ruckus 2.
How’d your training camp go?
Training has been good. I’ve had the flu for a little while and just started training again a couple days ago. I plan on training very intense up until the fight.
Your original opponent got hurt, do you know who your opponent is going to be yet?
I heard that Kyle got hurt in training and I am not sure exactly who I am fighting. I heard it is down to two guys, but I don’t know who it is yet.
Was there an aspect of your game you worked more than the rest?
I knew Kyle was a good jiu jitsu guy so I was training my ground game. When he got hurt, I just switched to working on my wrestling as the guys I heard I could be fighting are good wrestlers.
Where are you training out of?
West Chester Ohio. I train with Jorge Gurgel.
Being sick do you think there’s any issues with your weight cut?
Yeah a little bit. I haven’t been able to eat well because of being sick. I’ve been throwing stuff up. My weight probably won’t be that bad, but I am a little worried about my cardio.
Any sponsors or people you want to thank?
Mia, my brother, my family and friends. Everyone sticking to me when fight time comes up.

Two Fights Added To Ruckus 2
Ruckus Entertainment has just released two new fights for their March 12 event, “Ruckus 2″. Kyle Watson (15-6) takes on Tyler Combs (12-4) in a welterweight match up and Dustin Neace (25-15) takes on Anthony Marti (7-2) in a lightweight bout.
Watson trains out of “The Hit Squad” and is currently riding a four-fight win streak. Watson’s lone loss in the past three years came at the hands of Tyler Jackson in a hard fought close split decision at “Bodog Fight: Costa Rica Combat”.
Combs meanwhile is coming off a loss to WEC fighter Bart Palaszewski at XFO 32. Combs currently holds the Midwest Fighting Championship welterweight belt.
Dustin Neace last saw action at “Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers” in November of 2009. The fight ended with a freak rib injury forcing Neace to submit to Jeff Curran. Neace is currently riding a three-fight losing streak and is hoping his training at the Hughes owned “Hit Squad” will bring him just that.
Marti is currently 5-1 in his last six fights and is undefeated under the “Xtreme Fighting Organization” banner. In all of Marti’s victories, he has submitted his opponent within the first round.
“Ruckus 2″ takes place on Friday March 12 at Venuti’s Banquet Hall in Addision, Illinois. The night will be headlined in a middleweight contest between Jeremy May and Chris Albandia.
