UFC 146 Results: Dos Santos Defends Title, Cain Bloodies Big Foot

Written by MMARecap Staff on . Posted in Results

UFC 146 took place at the MGM Grand tonight in Las Vegas, Nevada for the first all heavyweight card in UFC history. Junior dos Santos defended his belt for the first time against Frank Mir, when he finished him with strikes three minutes into the second round. Mir didn’t have much for dos Santos offense wise, and seemed defeated when he couldn’t get the fight to the floor.

In the co-main event, it was Cain Velasquez who bloodied up Antonio Silva early in the fight from half guard, and opened up a huge cut over the eye of Silva. Referee Yves Lavigne even stopped the fight at one point to have the doctor check on the cut, but the fight continued. After another minute, LaVigne stepped in to stop the bout, and give Velasquez his first win since losing his belt to Junior dos Santos.

The entire main card was all finishes, and none of the fights entered the third round. The collective time for all the main card fights was 21:50, and it left plenty of time to show some of the under card fights. Below are the full results for UFC 146.

UFC 141 Preview: Jim Hettes vs. Nam Phan

The final UFC card of the year will be taking place on Friday, December 30th from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. While most eyes are on one of the biggest main events featuring Brock Lesnar versus Alistair Overeem, a featherweight bought that is part of the main card will likely be the fight many will talk about as Jim Hettes and Nam Phan are set to do battle.

Hettes made his UFC debut on short notice in August when he took on Alex Caceres at UFC Live 5. Hettes finished Caceres in the second round by a rear naked choke, earning him his ninth straight submission victory.

Phan meanwhile has had a bit of a rocky road in the UFC. He made his official debut at the Ultimate Fighter 12 finale against Leonard Garcia after competing on reality show but falling short in the semi-finals. His first fight against Garcia earned a coveted “Fight of the Night” award, and many had Phan winning the fight. However the judges saw it differently and Garcia won a split decision.

Phan then fought former WEC featherweight champion Mike Brown at UFC 133. Brown dominated the first round so much so that one judge scored it a 10-8 round, but Phan rebounded in the second round and easily won that round. The third round was extremely close, but Brown edged out Phan to earn a victory and put Phan on a two-fight losing skid.

Phan was set to fight Matt Grice at UFC 136, but an injury forced Grice out. Leonard Garcia stepped in on short notice to take the fight and the two put on an amazing show yet again. However this time it was clear that Phan was the victor.

In previewing this fight one immediately thinks of the “styles makes fights” quote that is so often thrown around. Garcia and Phan were sure to excite the crowd as neither is one to back down from a slugfest. Phan an excellent striker with a background in Taekwondo and Karate has won more fights by TKO than any other method. His goal will be to keep the fight standing where his strength lies.

On the other side of the equation is Hettes who hasn’t lost a fight and has won all of his fights by way of submission. His background primarily lies in jiu jitsu and judo, but has also been training boxing since the age of 14. Hettes has used his hands to set up his submissions in the past and will likely look to exchange with Phan before even attempting a takedown.

In predicting this fight one has a lot of options to consider. Phan is a favorite for his style, but it leaves him open for attacks. Additionally in his last fight with Garcia, his gas tank was clearly empty by the third round. Hettes meanwhile hasn’t even seen a third round and one has to wonder what his will be like at the twelve minute mark. Hettes has to be given a lot of credit for his debut fight as not only was it on short notice, but he won. Something that is rare for such young fighters as they typically get “UFC Jitters”.

As for the prediction in this fight, I have to compare this to roulette in Vegas. Often times people will come up to the table and see that red has hit for the last nine times and say that it’s time for black to hit; only it doesn’t. In this case, Hettes will continue his winning ways and finish Phan off with a submission in the second round.
