Amateur Card:

Brandon Clawson vs. William Cottrell
Round one: Clawson started with two kicks and punches to push Cottrell backwards. Cottrell charged forward and ate a body kick, but was able to move the action to the cage. Cottrell secured a high crotch and slammed Clawson to the ground. Two reversals for dominate positions from both fighters as they worked on the ground. Clawson finally worked for half guard as Cottrell tried to control the head with his arms. Cottrell worked hard for a guillotine submission while against the cage. Cottrell moved to full guard. Clawson popped out his head and rained a few punches down as the round ended.

Round two: Clawson started round two with more kicks to the legs and body of Cottrell. Clawson got the over under and bounced Cottrell off the cage wall for an over the shoulder slam. Clawson quickly moved into full mount from there. Cottrell secured the head and worked for a guillotine again. Clawson reversed it for an arm bar attempt. Cottrell was able to escape with the little room give from Clawson. Clawson moved to the back of Cottrell and sunk in his hooks and trapped Cottrell’s left arm to his chest. Clawson was able to sink in the RNC quickly after that.

Result: Brandon Clawson defeated William Cottrell via tapout due to a RNC at 2.14 of round two

Christopher Jewell vs. Adam Gonzales
Round one: Gonzales threw a kick that was caught by Jewell and moved in for the takedown. Gonzales secured guard and rolled over quickly to put Jewell on his back. Gonzales moved up towards Jewell’s head and shifted his weight towards the right arm of Jewell. Gonzales trapped the arm with his chest, swung his legs over Jewell’s head and secured the arm bar for the tap.

Result: Adam Gonzales defeated Christopher Jewell via tapout due to an arm bar at .14 of round one

Jordan Crider vs. Gary Widget
Round one: Widget took the center first, but Crider fired off a one-two combo that landed. Widget was stumbling backwards while Widget went in for the takedown. Widget secured full mount and moved the fight to his corner. Crider tried to roll out from under Widget, but Widget took the back instead. Crider stood up with Widget still holding his back with a body lock. Crider rolled forward for a leg lock that almost ends the fight. Widget spun over the body of Crider to counter and took his back again. Widget sunk in his hooks and Crider left his neck exposed. Widget was able to capitalize for the choke.

Result: Gary Widget defeated Jordan Crider via tapout due to a RNC at 1.48 of round one

Patrick Ruby vs. JD McCain
Round one: Ruby shot in for a takedown immediately when the round started. McCain closely had a guillotine choke, but Ruby fought out of it. Ruby secured a deep triangle choke, but McCain had no intention of tapping out. Ruby still with the choke locked in moved to the mount. McCain rolled out under of Ruby and moved to his own knees. McCain now tried to soften the hold from Ruby, but the hold was too much and McCain tapped out.

Result: Patrick Ruby defeated JD McCain via tapout due to a triangle choke at 2.37 of round one

Jacob Hurlock vs. Gabriel Randolph
Round one: Randolph took the center of the cage and started to throw kicks and small combos. Hurlock shot in for a takedown, but stuffed by Randolph. Reversed by Hurlock and now Randolph was on the bottom. Hurlock secured a triangle from a scramble and crowd erupted in excitement. Everyone was sending instructions to try and finish the fight. Randolph finally tapped out from the hold.

Result: Jacob Hurlock defeated Gabriel Randolph via tapout due to a triangle choke at 2.01 of round one

Professional Card

Daniel Head vs. Evan Delong
Round one: Head took the center of the cage first. Delong with a soft combo to find distance. Push kick from Delong was countered by a takedown attempt from Head. Knees fired from both fighters while up against the cage. Until Head slammed Delong down into side control. They fought for position, but both defended well against the other. Delong fought out to stand on his feet and neck control. Delong dropped down for a guillotine choke, but Head fought out of the attempt. Head worked from the bottom for a kimura, but Delong defended well from half guard. Fight stalled a bit against the cage. Ref was content to let them work. Delong started to punch from the top position to the face of Head as the round ended.

Round two: Head throw a head kick to start the round, but it was blocked by Delong and countered with a takedown in the center of the cage. Delong backed away and left Head on the ground on his back. Delong content with a stand up. Delong moved forward with head kicks, left hook and knees to the body and some of them landed. With both fighters up against the cage, Head went for a flying kimura that excited the crowd. Delong defended that attempt, but Head answered with an arm bar attempt as well. Losing the position Head let got the attempt and tried to put Delong on his back. Delong reversed and ended up in Delong’s guard throwing down punches. Head answered with elbows from the bottom. Delong broke out form the guard and wanted to stand up. Head was still dazed and Delong unleashed a borage of attacks with punches, high and low kicks and knees. Head is clearly dazed. Delong with an easy takedown against the cage as the round ends.

Round three: Delong opened up with low kicks that Head tried to counter, but not working. Delong landed heavy punches to the face of Head, but he was still standing and traded. Head had clearly slowed, but pushed forward until Delong was against the cage. Head secured a trip to end up in half guard. While Head went for a kimura, Delong used his momentum to revise the position and end up on top in Head’s guard. Delong started to land punches from the top position. Delong held Head down for most of this round. He was content with landing a few punches now and then to keep the dominant position. Delong finally broke the position and stood up, but sent a push kick to Head’s stomach and then a follow up takedown to end the fight in half guard raining punches.

Result: Evan Delong defeated Daniel Head via Unanimous Decision (30-27)

Henry Goonen vs. Casey Craft
Round one: Craft started off with a huge battle cry scream the backed away while Goonen who took the center. Craft shot in for the takedown and ended up in Goonen’s half guard. Little work was done from here from either fighter. A few body shots landed from Craft to Goonen’s left ribs from this position. Goonen was still holding Craft in closed guard. Ref stands them back up. Hard outside leg kicks from Goonen and made Craft back up. A spinning heel kick from Craft just missed the mark. Craft pushed forward for a takedown and bounced off the cage wall to complete it. Craft ended up in Goonen’s half guard and worked his short-range strikes. Goonen used his legs to spin out from under his opponent, but Craft blocked his advances. Ref stands them up again. Another spinning back heel kick from Craft as the round ended.

Round two: Punches from Goonen, but countered from Craft with outside leg kicks. Both fighters danced around the center of the cage until Craft dropped down for a double leg takedown in to Goonen’s closed guard. Punches from Craft landed on the left of Goonen’s ribs. Goonen briefly attempted a guillotine choke, but let it go soon after. Craft showed very strong control in the guard position against the cage. Ref called for another stand up. Goonen is showed damage on his ribs from all of the strikes. Another takedown from Craft and strong hammer fists started to land on Goonen’s face. Ref stepped to stop the fight. The doctors check on Goonen as laid on the mat.

Result: Casey Craft defeated Henry Goonen via TKO (strikes) at 3.41 of round two

Mike Eikenberry vs. Tyson Triplett
Round one: Superman punch from Eikenberry to start the fight. Triplett counters with inside and outside leg kicks. Triplett ducked under Eikenberry’s punches for a single, but quickly abandoned that. They moved back to the center for kickboxing. Eikenberry caught Triplett with another and right. Triplett pushed back with an over hand right that dropped Eikenberry. Triplett didn’t follow the purple belt to the ground and let him back up. More kick boxing in the center of the cage. Sidekick found a home from Triplett to Eikenberry’s abs. A great inside leg kick form Triplett. Triplett seemed to watch to keep the distance, but Eikenberry closed in on him against the cage for the clinch and body lock. Eikenberry’s takedown attempt was reversed by Triplett and he landed punches. Eikenberry didn’t respond in time for the ref’s liking and called the fight.

Result: Tyson Triplett defeated Mike Eikenberry via referee stoppage at 4.23 of round one

Robbie Nieto vs. Jamey Scruggs
Round one: Scruggs struck first with a one-two combo that lands on Nieto’s face. Scruggs had a tight and low boxing stance in the center of the cage. Nieto pushed forward for a takedown, but couldn’t finish while against the cage. They broke clean and restarted in the center. Scruggs pushed forward and they clinched against the cage, but no damage done by either fighter. Strong but simple combos from Scruggs, but Nieto countered with a takedown in to half guard. Nieto kept his weight on Scruggs and advanced position into side control. Scruggs attempted a kimura and Nieto defended it well and moved into north-south. Nieto went in for a choke, but couldn’t finish. Moved to back to side control as the rounded.

Round two: Nieto pushed forward hard and Scruggs countered with punches and a missed knee attempted. Both fighters opened up for this round. Scruggs pushed back hard. Nieto landed a head kick, but Scruggs seemed unfazed. Scruggs with another one-two combo that landed. Strong cross from Scruggs landed on the side of Nieto’s face. Nieto repeated the uppercut punch, but Scruggs defended it well. Another combo landed from Nieto. Nieto started to show damage from his nose and started to bleed. Nieto blocked a punch and quickly countered with a body shot to the left ribs of Scruggs.

Round three: Nieto scored the takedown early; he ducked under a jab from Scruggs. Nieto started to work from half guard. Scruggs stood up, wrapped his right arm around Nieto’s head and sat back down for a guillotine choke. It looked deep but Nieto worked to get out of it. The crowd loved it. Nieto went to back control and landed knees to the left ribs of Scruggs with all of his weight behind it. Scruggs held on to the two-on-one technic as Nieto landed more knees to the ribs. Nieto switched to punches as Scruggs dove on a kimura attempt from the bottom. Scruggs ended up on his back and Nieto in side control. Scruggs tried to sit up, but Nieto with great control and pushed him back down. Scruggs found space to stand up as Nieto was switching for positions. They went back to their feet and center of the cage. Scruggs threw one punch and Nieto tucked under again for another secured takedown. Nieto quickly moved to mount and punched the face of Scruggs as the fight ended.

Result: Robbie Nieto defeated Jamey Scruggs via a Unanimous Decision (30-27 x2, 29-28)

David Love vs. Chase Beebe
Round one: Beebe opened up with a head kick that was blocked by Love. Beebe pushed in with a combo and countered by Beebe with punches of his own. They moved to the cage in the clinch. Knees landed from both fighters before they broke. Push kick from Love that landed to send Beebe backwards. Beebe moved in for the clinch again and delivered strong knees to the body. Beebe slowly worked for a takedown. Love attempted an arm bar, but was stuffed by Beebe. Beebe continued to work from the top with punches. Love attempted another arm bar from the bottom but countered by Beebe with a body triangle and moved to back mount. Beebe put Nieto on his stomach and flatted him out. Beebe put his arms around Love’s head for the choke and the tap.

Result: Chase Beebe defeated David Love via tapout due to a RNC at 3.02 of round one

Colosseum Combat XVI took place on Saturday February 19 at the Kokomo Event Center in Kokomo, Indiana.  The night of action saw seven amateur fights and six professional bouts.  Read on for the full results and recap of Colosseum Combat 16.

Kicking off the amateur card was a fight between Derek Cook and Shawn Bottoms.  After a touch of gloves, Bottoms threw and nearly landed a flying knee and then transitioned to pulling guard.  Cook stood out of the guard and Bottoms followed him up.  Both fighters exchanged knees before Bottoms tripped Cook and landed in full mount.  Bottoms was working for an angle when Cook gave up his back.  Bottoms quickly moved his arm under the chin of Cook and squeezed until Cook was forced to tap.

An exciting fight was up next as Drew Walters took on Dustin Conley.  Conley came out with leg kicks that were throwing Conley off until Conley caught one and took the fight to the ground.  Once on the ground, Walters transitioned from guard to half guard, to side control to mount.  Once in the mount, Walters was relentless with his strikes.  Conley gave up his back to try and escape, but Walters continued until the ref halted the action.

A bit of controversy between Jacob Hurlock and Jordan Crider.  The first two rounds were back and forth with each fighter getting one round a piece by our account.  In the third round Hurlock shot for a takedown and Crider sprawled and landed a big right that hurt Hurlock.  Crider worked multiple strikes and Hurlock threw up his legs and secured an armbar.  Crider worked to get out of it by putting his hand on the canvas.  At this point Hurlock’s corner started yelling that Crider tapped.  The ref didn’t see a tap and didn’t stop the action.  Hurlock gave up his back and Crider nearly finished with a rear naked choke.  Hurlock was able to escape and both fighters were stood up.  Crider took Hurlock down and worked ground and pound until time ran out.  In the end, all three judges scored it for Crider.

Rod Cole took a beating from Mike Walker.  In the first round Walker quickly took Cole to the ground and got the mount.  From there Walker was both patient and relentless with his strikes when they came.  Walker opened up a cut on Cole’s face.  With time running out of the round, Walker tried to finish the fight with an arm triangle choke.  At the start of the second, Cole came out swinging, knowing his only hope was to land the knockout punch, but Walker took the fight to the ground.  Once Walker got mount again, Cole said he had enough and verbally submitted.

The amateur fight of the night went to Devin Miller and Markous Smith.  The first round Smith and Miller spent the first half in the clinch against the cage where they both were landing knees.  After a separation, Miller caught a leg kick by Smith and took him down.  Smith however was working multiple strikes and submissions and Miller didn’t do much with the dominant position.  As time was running out, Smith nearly locked in an armbar but time wasn’t on his side.  The second round Smith was utilizing his reach advantage with his kicks before Miller took the fight to the ground.  Miller landed some serious ground and pound through out the rest of the round.  Many in attendance had the fight one round a piece and erupted for the start of the third round.  Miller immediately came out and got a takedown, but Smith defended and worked for a triangle.  With neither fighter advancing their position, the ref stood the fighters up.  Miller again went for the takedown, this time however Smith defended and threw nearly twenty knees to end the round.  MMA Recap scored it 29-28 for Smith.  The score cards were read and it was a split decision for MIller.

Nicholas Anderson has one of the best chins in the game.  Matthew Perry came out in the first round and clinched and landed several knees that hurt Anderson, but didn’t finish him.  Most of the round saw Perry utilizing a Thai clinch and landing knees while Anderson would land body shots and uppercuts.  With time running out Anderson was swinging and nearly caught Perry with a hook.  The second round Perry controlled the action with takedowns and passing to side control.  Anderson was able to minimize the damage and defended the position well each time he was taken down, but couldn’t do any damage of his own.  The third round was a back and forth round with both fighters taking each other down, only to have the other stand up quickly.  Perry was able to land knees in the transitions between the takedowns and won the third round as well.

The final amateur fight saw Henry Goonen take on Michael Shields.  Goonen was landing leg kicks and Shields looked to clinch.  From the clinch, Shields took Goonen down with a big slam.  Shields worked small strikes to create distance and then started to unload.  While Goonen was covering up, he did little else and the ref was forced to halt the action.

The first professional fight saw Mark Neville take on James Porter who was making his professional debut.  Porter came out in a Muay Thai stance and quickly established his kick.  Porter landed a spinning heel kick that made the crowd go crazy.  Porter then took the fight to the ground and quickly passed to mount.  Neville was able to escape by feinting giving up his back and then spinning back into Porter’s guard.  Porter quickly countered by throwing his legs up and locked in a fight ending armbar.

Brady Hovermale made his professional debut against Ryan Mcintosh.  The fighters quickly clinched and were landing multiple knees.  As they separated Hovermale nearly landed a high kick.  Mcintosh attempted a push kick, but Hovermale grabbed it and took the fight to the ground.  Once on the ground, Hovermale dominated with multiple punches.  Mcintosh attempted submissions, but Hovermale was able to escape.  As the round ended, Hovermale let his hands fly to ensure the round went to him.  As the second round was about to start, Mcintosh stated he couldn’t see out of his right eye and the fight was ended.

The next fight had many confused as Mike Eikenberry took on Mike Berry.  Eikenberry came out strong and landed a big left that stumbled Berry.  Eikenberry attempted to get the back, but was unable.  As the fighters separated, Eikenberry tagged Berry with another couple of solid shots.  Once they squared away, Berry then took control with body kick, one-two combo.  Berry followed that up with a high kick and Eikenberry dropped to the canvas.  Berry followed it up with several strikes until the ref could stop the action.

If you blinked you missed the fight between Josh Kinser and Greg Miller.  Miller came out with a body kick.  Kinser circled to the right and threw an overhand right that knocked Miller out cold.

The night’s co-main event featured Dustin Neace taking on David Love.  The first round Love landed several leg kicks before the two clinched.  Neace landed several knees before Love took Neace to the ground.  While on the ground Love worked several punches and hammer fists, while Neace looked for short elbows.  Neace worked for an armbar, but Love just slammed his way out.  The action stalled and the ref stood the fighters up.  Love was swinging wildly and caught Neace with a kick to the grown.  After the restart, Love continued his barrage of strikes as time ended.  The second round Love rocked Neace with a kick and let Neace back up.  Love started throwing with bad intentions and Neace caught him with an overhand right.  Neace started to find his range and Love was in trouble.  Neace took Love down but Love grabbed a guillotine choke.  Neace worked out of the choke and against picked Love up for a slam takedown.  Again, Love worked for a guillotine choke, but couldn’t get it.  Love was visibly tired and Neace started working his strikes.  Love threw his legs up to work for an armbar, and it was in deep.  Neace tried to escape, but was forced to tap.

The main event featured Daniel Head moving up in weight to take on Ryan Thomas in a welterweight matchup.  Both fighters came out with kicks and then Head took the fight to the ground.  Head was working punches and Thomas was able to sneak his legs passed one of Head’s arms, to secure a triangle choke. Head tried to work his way out, but Thomas worked punches and elbows before pulling Head’s head down and squeezing until Head tapped.
