Invicta FC might not have set out doing an all women’s mma card just to prove good old Dana wrong, but after only two shows, it seems like they just might.
The night was headlined by three women’s bouts, all in the 135lb division. When the main event featuring Sara McMann and Shayna Baszler was announced, several thought it was going to be a boring fight. The three-round fight was anything but boring as it was the best fight of the night. Much like a fourth of July fireworks show, these two women wanted to end the night with an amazing display and did just that.
Prior to the main event, Liz Carmouche was able to secure a rear naked choke over Kaitlin Young and Alexis Davis put on a fantastic show of skill against Hitomi Akano. All three women were asked about an Invicta title shot, and all three agreed that they would like to fight for gold.
Even the other 135lb battles showed the talent of the ladies as Amanda Nunes choked Raquel Pa’aluhi out cold with a rear naked choke and Sarah D’Alelio secured her second Invicta FC victory over Vanessa Porto by armbar.
Outside of the bantamweight division, other fighters were making a case for women’s mma. The opening bout between Liz McCarthy and Jessica Philippus was a fantastic five minute battle. Philippus’s eye was so swollen from McCarthy’s jabs that the doctor ruled her unable to continue. Julia Budd put on a dominant performance over Elina Nilsson with a technical knockout just under the four minute mark of the first round.
And while there were four other fights that went to the judges’s scorecards, all were exciting.
While the depth of talent may not be there in Dana White’s eyes, one can’t help but remember the famous quote from Field of Dreams, “If you build it, they will come.” It seems in this case, that Invicta FC has built a place for women to showcase their skills as mixed martial artists, and indeed they are coming to do just that.
