Cage Warriors 48 Tenth Anniversary Results

Written by MMARecap Staff on . Posted in News, Results

Cage Warriors 48 took place this evening in London, England and put on a quite a night of fights for their tenth anniversary show. In the main event, Chris Fields seemed to be handling John Phillips for a round and a half, and had Phillips in several bad positions and threatening with submissions. Half way through the second round, Phillips was able to grab a hold of Fields’ neck and cinch up the guillotine choke from his back. The co-main event was a back and forth affair between Danny Roberts and Jack Mason. Roberts was able to the turn the tables from his back, and control the arm of Mason from his back.  Mason was forced to tap when Roberts was able to hyper-extend his arm giving Roberts the submission win in the second round.

Congratulations to Cage Warriors on this landmark night of fights.

Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Kennedy took place Saturday night in Portland, Oregon and featured two championship fights that both went five rounds. In the main event it was Luke Rockhold who defeated Tim Kennedy by unanimous decision in an exciting fight. Although Rockhold was able to win four out of the five rounds, Kennedy came to fight and he didn’t make it easy for Luke. It was the size and timing of Rockhold which enabled him to win the rounds he did. In the co-main event, it was Nate Marquardt and Tyrone Woodley who fought for the vacant welterweight title. The fight was a back and forth affair until the fourth round when Marquardt landed a viscous over hand elbow that put Woodley out on his feet. Supreme Promotions Brawl at the Hall 4 Poster

Supreme Promotions “Brawl At The Hall IV.” featured eleven great action packed fights on the card at Joliet’s IBEW union hall in Joliet, Illinois. The event held nine regular amateur fights and two main event championship fights.

The card’s main event was the 170 pound championship bout that featured defending Supreme Promotions champion Ivory Blackwell facing Stefan Von Aulock.

Blackwell started the fight off aggressive landing some heavy strikes on Von Aulock. As Von Aulock went to his back early in the fight, he landed an up kick that was an unintentional low blow. The fight was restarted with Blackwell taking Von Aulock down. Von Aulock was able to get to his feet and the two scrambled into the fence ending round one. The next two rounds remained the same as Blackwell took Von Aulock down staying busy with shots while in his guard until halfway into the third round. In the third, Von Aulock began opening up from his back landing shots on Blackwell staying busy. Von Aulock attempted a triangle choke nearly submitting Blackwell, but Blackwell managed to get out of the hold ending the third round. At the start of round four, Von Aulock got a quick takedown on Blackwell and managed to get a full mount. He was relentless with his ground and pound and with Blackwell not responding to Von Aulock’s punches, the referee called a halt to the action at :54 of round number four. With the technical knockout victory, Von Aulock became the new Supreme Promotions 170 pound champion.

The Co-main event of the evening was for the Supreme Promotion’s 145 pound championship bout that matched up defending champion Ramsey Beard taking on Bobby Andrews. The fight began with Beard getting a takedown on Andrews with Beard getting Andrew’s back. Beard worked Andrews for a bit softening him up with shots to the body. Beard would eventually secure the rear naked choke to get the victory at 1:44 of round one to retain the 145 pound championship.

A 185 pound fight featured Bill Ward taking on Andrew Potapenko who was just coming off of a win four weeks earlier. Most of the fight saw Ward continuously take down Potapenko trying to stay busy on top throwing strikes. Potapenko, who is known for having non stop submission attempts did just that in the fight. In the first round, Potapenko attempted an armbar, but was picked up and slammed by Ward. The second round remained the same with Ward taking Potapenko down, but remaining calm and confident. Potapenko kept trying for submission after submission attempt and would not stop. Round three came and at :57 of the final round, Potapenko secured a triangle choke that made Ward go out from refusing to tap. The victory earned Potapenko a shot at the Supreme Promotion 185 pound championship in September.

One of the evening’s featured bouts was a 170 pound contest between Josh Streaker and Joe Hruben. The two warriors engaged in an action packed fight that was non stop. Just as each fighter seemed tired, they both would land good combinations and kicks. Streaker stayed active for most the fight as Hruben pressed forward throwing combinations of his own, but it was Streaker landing more punches and spinning back kicks that would get him the unanimous decision victory in the fight.

The card’s only 155 pound fight was Black Olsen taking on Justin Vazquez. The fight began with Vazquez landing a kick and a punch then driving Olsen to the cage getting his back. Olsen managed to shake Vazquez off of his back taking Vazquez down landing strikes. Vazquez worked a couple of triangle attempts, but Olsen escaped them both staying busy in Vazquez’s guard ending the first round. The second round began with Olsen clinching landing knees to Vazquez’s body. Action slowed down causing the referee to separate the fighters. Olsen appeared to be dominating the stand up before he took Vazquez down and stayed busy landing shots while in his guard. Vazquez again attempted a submission, but Olsen escaped only to be flipped over by Vazquez, but the round had ended before Vazquez can do any kind of offense. The final round began with both fighters exchanging blows. The two fighters ended up scrambling on the fence. Olsen managed to get Vazquez in a clinch landing more knees. Vazquez attempted a takedown on Olsen, but was stuffed as Olsen took the top position this time raining down strikes non stop prompting the referee to stop the fight with Olsen being declared the winner at 2:30 of round three by tko due to strikes.

The evening had two 130 pound fights on the card with one of them featuring Mario Martinez taking on Matt Brown. The round began with Martinez swinging for the fences before getting dropped by a right from Brown. Martinez got right back up throwing more shots at Brown before losing his balance. Brown capitalized taking the back of Martinez sinking a rear naked choke getting the victory at 2:24 of round one.

Tony Maldonado faced Cody Simmon in a 145 pound bout. Maldonado started out strong throwing and landing a huge barrage of shots. He dropped Simmon throwing more strikes and stayed busy in Simmon’s guard. Both fighters were stood up once action slowed down. Maldonado landed shots taking Simmon down as the round ended. Round two began, but action was stopped for a short time due to loose tape on Maldonado. Action restarted with Maldonado throwing more strikes followed by a spinning back kick flooring Simmon. Maldonado once again ended up in Simmon’s guard staying busy and scoring with shots to the head and body. Action slowed on the ground and the two were stood up. Maldonado went back to dominating stand up once again flooring Simmon, but Simmon continued to show heart and courage attempting an armbar, but Maldonado escaped with the second round coming to an end. The final round began with Maldonado landing a big right on Simmon. Simmon went for a kick, but missed. Maldonado began to open up huge in the stand up again flooring Simmon staying busy in Simmon’s guard scoring with more strikes. The two fighters were stood up. By this time Simmon’s nose was bleeding profusely and was knocked down two more times by Maldonado making it five times he was knocked down in the fight, but managed to get back up without giving up, the fight ended with Simmon staggering to his corner. Maldonado went on to win the fight by unanimous decision.

In a 145 pound bout Gavin Reed faced Jake Rose. Reed dominated the entire first round taking down Rose landing strikes. The second round began the same with Reed landing his strikes. This time they were unanswered and Reed was pronounced the victor at :49 due to tko.

In a 130 pound bout Cesar Odrica faced Derek Jackson. The fight began with the two fighters feeling each other out throwing kicks. Jackson Landed kicks followed up with a quick one-two combination. The two circled and Jackson landed a sharp kick while Odorica pressed the fight landing kicks of his own. Jackson seemed the quicker and more active of the two fighters landing more strikes ending the first round. Round two began the same as round one with the two fighters feeling one another out. Odrica unintentionally low blowed Jackson. Jackson took a few seconds to recover. Jackson appeared to get the better of the exchanges landing quick one-two combinations, but towards the end of the second round, Odorica came on strong landing punches ending the second round. The final round began with the fight seeming close with Odorica starting out strong. Jackson fired back with quick combinations of his ownfollowed by kicks. Jackson went for a superman punch missing as Odorica looked to press the action throwing kicks at least landing three out of the four he threw, but Jackson caught him with a couple more one-two combos with the fight ending going the distance. In a very close fight, Cesar Odorica wins by unanimous decision over Derek Jackson.

In another 130 pound bout, Christian Martinez faced Evan Larson. Martinez dominated with takedowns on Larson. Larson seemed to come close to a submission attempt off his back with a triangle, but was unsuccessful. Martinez dominated with his striking while on top of Larson winning by way of tko due to strikes at 2:54 of round one.

In a 185 pound fight Jarole Mobley defeated Jacob Brewick giving him his first loss as an amateur as Brewick came into this fight with an 8-0 record. Brewick appeared to have the fight going his way early on landing a good amount of shots, but was caught and dropped by Mobley from a right with Mobley taking his back landing strikes forcing referee to stop the action at 2:37 of round one.

UFC on Fuel 4: Muñoz vs. Weidman – Fight Results

Written by MMARecap Staff on . Posted in Results

UFC on Fuel 4 took place this Wednesday night at the HP Pavilion. The fans at the HP Pavilion as well as the viewers at home were treated to a great night of fights. The main event on paper really seemed like it would be a close affair, but we saw a one-sided performance by Chris Weidman over Mark Muñoz.  Weidman outwrestled Muñoz in the first round, and in the second Weidman caught Muñoz coming in with a viscous elbow that dropped Muñoz to the floor. From there Weidman rained down with punches until he was pulled off by referee, Josh Rosenthol. In the post fight speech, Weidman called out champion, Anderson Silva, for his next fight and alerted the UFC brass that every time he has had a full camp, he has gotten a finish. Weidman improves his undefeated record to 9-0.

In the co-main event James Te-Huna and Joey Beltran put on a 3 round war. Beltran, who was making his light heavyweight debut, took a five minute beating in the first round, and was almost finished multiple times. Beltran was able to survive, and came out in the second and the third bring the fight to Te-Huna. At the end of the second, Beltran almost dropped Te-Huna, but the whole fight all together belonged to Te-Huna. They broke the record for most significant strikes landed in one fight in the light heavyweight division, and Te-Huna did more than enough to get the unanimous decision.

Bodylock Presents: Summer Brawl – Recap & Results

Written by MMARecap Staff on . Posted in Results

The Odeum Sports Complex was invaded again with a night of amateur mixed martial arts for Summer Brawl. The main event featured the finals from the iron man tournament between Matt Braxx and Oliver Vasquez. The rest of the night featured an impressive twenty-five fights. Read on for the full recap and results.

The first round of the tournament featured Oliver Vasquez taking on Otis Brumfield. Vasquez’s strategy was to take Brumfield down and pick his shots. Brumfield in the first round was able to defend with guillotine attempts and shot back up when he was taken down. Unfortunately in the second and third round, he didn’t have as much luck defending the attempts and spent more and more time on his back working for a guillotine that wasn’t there. Vasquez was able to get to side control by his fourth takedown and started to land knees to the body. Vasquez moved on to the finals with a unanimous decision.

Matt Braxx didn’t want to waste time in his tournament bout against Dustin Stusse. After a leg kick of his that was countered with punches, Braxx went for a head kick that just missed. Stusse clinched and looked for a takedown, but Braxx was able to get the underhooks and scored a takedown of his own. The right hands came fast and furious and Stusse gave up his back. Braxx continued his assault and the ref was forced to stop the fight.

The main event featured Braxx taking on Vasquez for the sword and the three-fight pro contract for Chicago Cagefighting Championship. The first round Vasquez wanted a takedown but it wasn’t there. Braxx was the one with the takedown but Vasquez quickly stood up. The two traded punches and Braxx started to connect. Vasquez escaped and ran away, eating another punch before attempting another takedown. The second round the two were fighting for a takedown as neither had it. Braxx grabbed Vasquez’s arm, but Vasquez stacked him and passed to side control. He worked small punches to the body and head. Braxx tried for submissions, but every time Vasquez punched his way out. The third round was extremely close as Vasquez scored a takedown at the start. Braxx stood up and then worked offense of his own. He grabbed a guillotine choke and pulled guard, but Vasquez popped out. He then nearly had a triangle choke but again Vasquez escaped. The two stood up and Braxx scored a takedown of his own. Vasquez tried to sneak out the back with a single leg, and he was able to as time ran out. The fight was close and the judges were split in awarding it for Braxx.

The co-main event featured heavyweight Angel Cabral and Eddie Ecobar. The first round Cabral nearly landed a spinning backfist, but followed it up with a good one two that caught Ecobar. The two clinched against the cage and Cabral used the opportunity to get a single leg takedown. He passed to mount and was patient in picking his punches. Ecobar tried to escape and Cabral just switched to side control to end the round. The second round it was Ecobar who controlled the action. Most of the round was spent in the clinch against the cage, but when available, Ecobar landed knees and uppercuts from the position. The third round Cabral shot for a takedown and it looked like Ecobar was going to escape with a great sprawl. But Cabral ducked under and took the back. Ecobar escaped the bad position by putting Cabral in his guard, but he was unable to get out from under him as he rolled and Cabral passed to mount. Cabral locked in an arm triangle but Ecobar defended, breaking the submission. Cabral finished the round on top with punches to the body and won the fight.

A scary moment between Nick Turner and Anthony Gasso as Turner scooped up Gasso to slam him down. Gasso fought the slam and landed badly on his head. But he recovered and worked for a triangle choke on Turner. Turner tried to punch his way out and Gasso adjusted for an armbar. It wasn’t there and Turner finished the round on top with punches. Turner shot for a takedown after an overhand right and got it. But Gasso wasn’t going to take it lightly and started throwing punches from the bottom. Gasso’s punches looked like they were causing damage and Turner verbally submitted after a jaw injury.

Some confusion between Daniel Szwab and Dan Almario as Szwab landed knees to the head of Almario which many thought were legal. But the rules in the pre-fight locker room stated they weren’t and thus Szwab was deducted a point for his knees. After a second stoppage from a knee, Szwab opted to not even try to throw a knee to the body and instead unloaded uppercuts against the covered up Almario. Several landed, then a big right hand dropped Almario and the fight was over.

Donnie Simpson scored a quick takedown on Gerald Mills. Mills worked a high guard, possibly trying to trap an arm, but Simpson passed to side control. Mills tried to control the head of Simpson, unfortunately for him, Simpson used the opportunity to get the back. Once there, he sunk in a rear naked choke and Mills immediately tapped.

Jim Kernats and Heath Nicholson both looked like they had explosive power in their hands and wanted the other to feel it. Kernats shot for a takedown, but Nicholson defended well. After separating, he wanted to land kicks, but was being countered with left hooks by Kernats. Both landed a stiff jab, snapping their heads back. Kernats then shot for a takedown and Nicholson countered with a guillotine. Kernats popped out of it and was in half guard. He passed to mount and looked for a keylock but then opted to punch him instead. Nicholson gave up his back and Kernats sunk in a fight ending rear naked choke.

Wes Anderson took the center of the cage against John Strater but immediately ate a big punch to throw him off. Strater threw a combo, but Anderson avoided and landed punches and knees. Strater tried to duck under a punch, but Anderson instead threw an uppercut and Strater was knocked to the ground. A quick follow up strike and the ref stopped it, though it looked like a knockout.

The theme of the night was to have a game plan and shut your opponent down and Angelo Rivera was able to do that against Stephan Von Aulock. Rivera avoided the striking on Von Aulock by clinching and then scoring a takedown. Rivera showed promise by always being able to secure his position, but rarely was he attacking after establishing it. He nearly finished the fight with an armbar that Von Aulock gave him, but Von Aulock escaped just before time ran out in the second round. Justin Mora had a smart game plan against Brandon Andriola; take him down and control the fight on the ground. It worked as Andriola couldn’t find his way out from under Mora. All three rounds Mora was able to get the fight to the ground. Andriola was able to move a little, but only to force Mora into his guard instead of the side mount. Mora worked punches to the body to try and set up a better position. Andriola defended well and even scored punches from the bottom bloodying up Mora. But it wasn’t enough as Mora just controlled the action more to win the decision.

Malinoff defended everything that Sarricola threw at her well, including some deep submissions. By the third round, Malinoff switched strategies and tried for takedowns, but her size factored against her as Sarricola was able to defend and land multiple hammer fists.
